Letter From The Chairman

The new St Dennis Community news has been born as

a result of many requests by the villagers of St Dennis, to replace the ‘Notes and News’.

A committee has been formed to run the magazine, and we have the opportunity to include many new ideas, and we hope the magazine will alter and grow as we find out what you would like to see each month.

The magazine is free of charge and you can pick one up in various outlets in St Dennis. Diary dates will be available on-line for ‘ex-pats’ or anyone with access to a computer at www.stdennis.netfirms.com.

The parish council have kindly provided some funding to help us start, and of course, revenue will be raised with the inclusion of adverts.

Included in the magazine will be a monthly diary of events in the village and surrounding areas. We will also feature one organization each month, with a full description of what they do and how they work.

Letters to the editor will be published at the discretion of the committee.

We hope you will make the Community News a huge success by sending us your diary dates, feature items, letters and anything else you wish to be included. Items should be submitted before the 15th of the month. Publication will be the 1st of the month following.

It’s all different since I was at school…” Is often heard.

St Denni s School continues to thrive and challenge. The school building has been altered and extended, the most recent extension being our brightly coloured nursery unit. I am delighted to be head teacher for a time. It’s a happy and busy place to be. Retired residents of St Dennis, who were former pupils, are welcome. Share some memories and see the changes and learning today.

ST DENNIS LOOSE THREADS

Hello everyone,  If you haven't heard of us before let me tell you what goes on.  We have been going for 4 years and meet usually on the first Tuesday of the month 7pm - 9pm at ClayTAWC.  There is a fee of £2 per person per meeting which pays for the hire of the room.  A wide range of crafts are covered: knitting, cross stitch, embroidery, card making to name but a few.  Just bring along whatever you are working on.  If you should be encountering difficulties there will always be someone to help.

Earlier this year we all had a go at Blackwork which gave us a new look at stitching.  In September we had a day out at Westpoint for their craft fair.  We had a great time and came home with tired feet, full bags and empty pockets.

If you would like to come along you will be made very welcome.  Our next meetings are November 6th, December 4th and January 8th. Wishing you all the best. Barbara Perkins (Tel: 01726 823480).

Letter from Brian Higman, County Councillor

I am delighted that St. Dennis has again been able to introduce a magazine, it is an excellent way of communicating and I wish all those involved in the hard work of putting it together very good luck and long may it continue.

I intend to try to keep an reports I write to issue at Cornwall County Council that relate to St. Dennis and hope I do not stray into “politics “ too much.

The main issue affecting St. Dennis at present is obviously I would assume the proposed Energy from Waste Plant and when a planning application might come forward. At the time of writing this report and having sought fro the planning people a likely time scale I have been unable to find a precise date but as far as I can ascertain that unless an application is received by the end of October then it is unlikely to come forward until the New Year.

Another planning application that is on the horizon, literally, is the Trelavour Downs workings by Goonvean. This is a review of what is known as their ROMPS agreement so it is not a case of refusing the application to tip there as that permission was established some time ago. The issue now is around how that is activated and the conditions that can be attached regarding the working and the restoration of the area during and after the application period.

I am sure you will have also read in the press the bid that the Cornwall County Council put to Government for Cornwall to become a Unitary Council has been accepted. This is intended to be a completely new Council that takes responsibility for all Local Authority issues in the County and the bid was based on the fact that it believed one Council would save money and be les confusing. It also included an intention to devolve some more powers down to Town and Parish Councils if they wished to take various responsibilities on and there is now a process going on to try and establish what various Councils may want to be responsible for.

In September I had my usual tour of the ward I represent with the Highways Divisional and Area Surveyor to point out various issues that had been brought to my attention over the previous year from residents and Parish Councillors. Much of that around St. Dennis related to the Traffic Survey I had commissioned there, some of the issues in that survey may be achievable from what is called my members area budget others would need greater funding and need to be part of priority need criteria that the Council works from. I have agreed with them a number of schemes to progress should my budget stretch to that but also in the hope that some other members in other parts of the County may not have used theirs and if I have schemes in place I may well be able to collar that remaining.

The seventh annual euchre tournament for the John Martin Memorial Shield was recently held at the St Dennis War Memorial Institute & Working Men's Club.  Once again his former euchre team colleagues organised the evening and donated the trophies.  The trophies were presented by Alan Martin as unfortunately John's wife was unable to attend.  Winners were Trish Allen and Jackie Simmonds with Doug and Jenny Ellacott runners up and Barbara and Bernard Tonkin in third place.  Other prizes were won by Steve Best and Geoff Hooper, and Reg and Wayne Powell.

Alan thanked everyone who contributed in any way and all who attended to make it such a successful evening.  Each year the proceeds of the evening are donated to a charity chosen by the family.  This year's charity was Cancer Research, St Dennis Branch, which has received and gratefully acknowledged a cheque for £261.50.

PARISH COUNCIL NEWS.

The Parish Council meet on the 2nd Tuesday of each month in The ClayTAWC Centre. All meetings start at 7 pm. and the public are very welcome to attend. There is a regular agenda item of 10 minutes duration when members of the public may speak and raise their particular concerns.

Notes from the Parish Council Meeting held on 9th October.

  1. The Community Policing report showed that there had been 8 reported crimes in September of which 3 had been detected.

  2. The Council received a report from Celine Elliot (YP2 Project Manager) who is trying to establish a project on the lower Trelavour Downs involving young people in the village. The form of the project has yet to be established but the Parish Council are very supportive of it and will be assisting in any way it can.

  3. A member of the public complained about the large amount of dog fouling on footpaths particularly in the School Lane area which is of course used by many children. At present the provision and emptying of dog fouling bins is carried out by Serco Ltd on behalf of Restormel Borough Council and the Parish Council are looking at ways to increase the provision of bins.

  4. The Parish Council have been lobbying the County Council for improvements at the lower pinch point in Hendra Road which is a cause of concern to many residents. It is hoped that at least double yellow lines will be introduced on the south side of the pinch point to prevent vehicles parking and obscuring vision up the road.

  5. The Parish Council has made a donation of £500 to the newly formed St Dennis Community News Group who are working to introduce a community magazine for the St Dennis area. The Council had received many requests to introduce a community magazine but IT NEEDS YOUR SUPPORT TO BE A SUCCESS.

  6. The Parish Council also confirmed a donation of £300 towards the costs of the ‘Over 70’s Christmas Lunch’.

************

The St Dennis Area Community Magazine Group would like to express their thanks to the St Dennis Parish Council for the donation of money to help bring this magazine to fruition.  Their kindness and generosity is greatly appreciated.
