A happy new year to you all.
It looks as if 2008 is going to be a year for the residents of St Dennis to get involved with new projects.
The first is an exciting idea from the Cornwall Rural Community Council, (ww.cornwallrcc.co.uk)
They are hoping to develop the downs above Manson Place as a Leisure area with young people in mind. They are going to need a responsible group of adults to oversee the project and if you are interested in helping, please contact Celine Elliott on 01726 821946 or celine.elliott@cornwallrcc.co.uk
Secondly, the need for a Parish Plan for St Dennis is more pressing than ever, with the introduction of a Unitary Council for Cornwall. A group must be formed to carry this project forward. If you are interested, please contact any member of the parish council, or write to clerk@stdennisparishcouncil.org
Lastly, our community police officer, Alex Fisher has been busy organizing a football training program which is held in the school playing field. This is for boys and girls in the village and surrounding area. Please go along if you would like to join in or help in any way.

Happy 70th Birthday
Many happy 70th returns to Miss Merle Oliver
and Mrs Molly Fox during December.
Happy 90th Birthday
Mrs Barrett celebrated

Congratulations
Mr Jack Burnett was
awarded the Fred Watters Shield for services to the village by the St Denys Old
Cornwall Society at a celebration held on 10th December. Jack is well
known in the village and has been a member of the Old Cornwall Society for many,
many years. He has aso served on the St Dennis Cancer Committee for a
total of 45 years, helped with both the football clubs and cut and attended to
the playing field for over 40 years. Jack just gets on with what has to be
done, he doesn't look for recognition or praise. This award is richly
deserved and long overdue. Many congratulations Jack and thank you for all
you do.
A young man by
the name of Ben Clarkson was awarded the Doug Creba Cup for youth achievement at
the same ceremony. Ben is aged 13 and was nominated by Brannel School for
his BMX racing achievements. He has represented both the county and the
country and is currently being put forward for the training programme for the
2012 Olympics. Unfortunately Ben was not able to attend the ceremony as he
is presently racing in France but his mother Mandy attended, together with
Grandma and Grandpa and sister Selena, to accept the award on Ben's
behalf. She read out a short statement provided by Ben in which he
expressed his thanks for this very Cornish award. Very well done
Ben

Well done to all who worked so hard to get this magazine up and running.
I found the first edition informative and I will try to write an article on a regular basis.
I am an Independent Borough Councillor for this area so I am not constrained by Party Politics. What does that mean? Well I can say what I feel even if it upsets a few.
Here is a simple example
I am on the Implementation Executive for the New Unitary Council for Cornwall.
At a luncheon in late November I sat next to a lady from North Cornwall who is constrained by political dogma so I sat back and listened. Others at the table knew of my ‘interest’ in the incinerator so they tried to draw me out. I chose to listen and make almost no contribution, sometimes a good listener learns more.
Why St.Dennis asked another and this lady answered------ ‘ It is sensible to have only one incinerator , after all what is the point of upsetting more than one community, if we had listened to what the protesters wanted we would have upset all manner of people’.
So there you there you have it, a small clay community, despite its inaccessibility, despite it produces very little waste , despite its lack of a rail connection ,despite the economics , Despite the FACT that the waste companies themselves didn’t want St. Dennis .
St. Dennis was the political choice and
I will never be convinced otherwise.

A Very Sad Day Coming
Up
Dear
Ed
We will be experiencing a
very sad day in the not too distant future when Karen Michaud and her sons leave
St Dennis. Karen has lived in St Dennis for five years and has become
actively involved in the Cancer Committee during that time. She has helped
to support many of the other voluntary organisations giving freely of her time
and money. She will be leaving to join her husband Steve who has been
posted to Maine where they have bought a new property. Steve, as many of
you will know, is a member of the United States Navy and was stationed at St
Mawgan JMF until 2007. He tells us via the internet that Maine is
experiencing thick snow at the moment - a fact I am not sure Karen will
appreciate! Karen has become a good friend to many people in the village
and will be sadly missed for her sense of fun and her many kindnesses. I
personally am not sure what I will do after she has gone, we have attended many,
many coffee mornings, bingo sessions, fetes and fayres together. St Dennis
will miss her and so will I but I wish her all the very best for her new future
in Maine, USA.

To The Editor
Twice recently I have heard on Radio Cornwall refer to our Claytawc building as the Clay T-A-W-C, this to me sounds a bit silly. Isn’t it about time we renamed it The Old School or something else. Even if we say “Claytalk” people may think that we talk of nothing but clay matters which is not the case of course.
Any other suggestions for a suitable name?
Yours Sincerely
Daphne Tucker Thomson

Working in St Dennis with local young people over the past six months has been a steep learning curve. While I have found no difficulty in initially forming relationships, gaining their trust over this time has been a crucial, and at times, difficult task. The first place I met local young people was on the area known as 'The Downs'. Bordered by Manson Place, Gothers Road and Trelavour Road, it was an area of apparent waste land where young people congregated to ride bikes, climb trees and just hang out with friends away from prying eyes! To the untrained eye this seemed to be scrap land which was blighted by fly-tipping and generally felt neglected. To the young people it clearly held the promise of adventure and fun.
I asked the young people what they liked to do and everything they talked about focused on this area of land: then they expressed a wish to improve it, not just for themselves but for their brothers and sisters, too. Not wishing to raise hopes which couldn't be fulfilled, I made enquiries about the ownership of the land, which lead me to the Tregothnan Estate. Initial conversations with the Estate Manager suggested that if a need could be demonstrated by the young people, and equivalent adult support could be raised, an arrangement to see the land developed for the community could be worked on.
Which brings us up to date. Over the summer, the young people worked with myself and a film maker (Krystyna Zdan-Michajlowicz of M-Mad) to produce a short film about the downs and it's importance to them. They also explored the possible options for developing the land, including tree-planting initiatives, a picnic area, bins and recycling facilities, a wet-land area to promote wildlife, as well as adventurous 'play' equipment for teenagers. Out of this 'wish list' it was easy to see that the young people envisioned an area for the whole community where grandparents and small children could enjoy themselves at the same time as local teenagers.
This image could seem at odds with that promoted traditionally of 'teenagers', but, in my experience as a youth worker, just as it is impossible to understand individual adults without first getting to know them, so it is with' teenagers'. The collective mass can seem intimidating, but as soon as names are remembered and questions about how they're feeling, what they've been doing etc. are asked, the trust that is necessary for meaningful relationships can begin to form. Once this is established, it needs to be built upon. This is the stage we currently find ourselves at: young people have created a vision of what they would like for the community, the landowner is willing to support this development, now what is missing are the adults to complete the picture. Once a group has been established to support these young people, funding can begin to be looked for to make their dreams a reality.
The Parish Council watched the film this week and a number seemed keen to join such a group - I would now like to extend the invitation to the whole community. Of course, if you have expertise or enthusiasm for such a scheme you are welcome, as are those who simply see the value in recognising the positive efforts of local teenagers to improve the area everyone lives in.
I can be contacted either through email celine.elliott@conrwallrcc.co.uk, by phone 01841 540 698, or feel free to drop-in and see me in my office at ClayTAWC.
I would also like to take this opportunity to thank PCSO Alex Fisher for her excellent ongoing work with local young people and St Dennis School for allowing our dance group the use of their hall.
Thank you
Celine Elliott
Project Manager YP2.

Football coaching

The Parish Council meet on the 2nd Tuesday of each month in the ClayTAWC Centre. All meetings start at 7 p.m. The public are very welcome to attend. There is a regular agenda item of 10 minutes duration when members of the public may speak and raise their particular concerns.
Notes from the Parish Council
meetings held on 28th
November and 11th
December.
PCSO Fisher reported that there had been 1 reported crime during November which had been detected. PCSO Fisher also reported on the proposed football coaching scheme to be run by PC Dingle for youngsters from the village aged 9-15 years. This follows the coaching recently provided for children up to 9 years old. The Parish Council are very supportive of this initiative and approved a donation of £150 towards the costs.
The Council received a DVD presentation by Celine Elliott on the proposed YP2 project for Trelavour Downs. Ms Elliott reported that funding for the provision for some form of recreation space for young people and others was accessable and that preliminary discussions had been held with young people to ascertain their views. Ms Elliott hopes to establish a project group to consider the matter further in January.
The Council agreed that a fence should be erected on its land in Hendra Prazey to minimise the danger posed by the leat to young children.
Reports from the Planning Committees held on the 10th and 24th November on local planning applications and the Council’s annual review of its contract with Landscapes Southwest Ltd were considered and approved.
Council received a report from Councillor Mrs Ellacott, representing the Parish Magazine Group, on the progress made and the success of the first two editions.
County Councillor Higman reported that there was a funding deficit of £4 million in the preliminary 2008/09 County budget but that sufficient savings could be found to balance it.
The Parish Council agreed its budget for 2008/09 and approved a precept of £30,550 on Restormel Borough Council. The increased precept takes account of inflation, safety works at Hendra Prazey, remedial work in the Garden of Rest in the Cemetery and eases the effect of the likely loss in 2009/10 of the grant paid by Restormel Borough Council for concurrent functions.

Why
can’t I make a pasty that looks the same each
time.
Like
all the bakers pasties do on the production line?
I’ve
had fifty years of practice, that should have taught me
how.
Seven
thousand pasties, I should have learned by now!
I make
the perfect pasty when it’s just ‘him’ and me.
With
crimping that’s PAR EXCELLENCE and perfect
symmetry.
The
hole is right in the middle and not a single
tear,
Oh yes,
I’m Mrs Beeton when no-one else is there!
So why,
when we’ve got visitors and I’m anxious to
impress,
Do all
the bloomin’ pasties turn out to be a mess?
The
pastry’s like lace curtains, with patches like a
quilt,
And
brown bits on the bottom where all the gravy’s
spilt.
But
still, when all is said and done, and the thing is on your
plate.
It’s
the taste which really matters, and the ‘teddies’ and the
‘mate’
I’ll
never be an ‘Ainsley’ the TV invite will not
come,
But who needs fame and fortune with a pasty in your tum.
From Clarice Westlake

St Dennis Male
Voice Choir
On Sunday
afternoon 16th December the St Dennis Male Voice Choir held it's final concert
at the Hendra Road Chapel. The chapel was full with members of the public,
former members of the choir and visitors from other choirs including the
Engineers and St Columba to name but two. The event was compared by
Jeanette Eathorn from Radio Cornwall in her usual entertaining way. There
were solo performances by Alison Harvey who has been the choir's soloist for the
last 12 years. Rico Gerber also performed a wonderful solo piece on
piano. The choir sang their way through the programme which contained
carols and songs as well as special arrangements of various pieces, with skill
and gusto as required. One of the last songs was Softly As I Leave You and
at the end This Is Our Song, both of which were sung with such emotion and
feeling that the audience was spellbound. Presentations and speeches
followed with thanks to many accompanists, musical directors and special thanks
to wives and families. Long service certificates were presented to two
members of the choir. The performance ended with all members of visiting choirs
and past members joining the Choir on stage for a rousing rendition of
Morte Christe, a fitting end to a marvelous event. The visiting choir
members then formed a guard of honour as the St Dennis Male Voice Choir exited
the chapel to the strains of Trelawney. What an afternoon. A great
time tinged with sadness that the choir is disbanding, but what memories we take
away with us. Thank you gentleman for the many times you have entertained
us and for a fantastic send off.
