Congratulations
Kim Roberts
celebrated her 18th birthday recently with a super trip to Disneyworld. We
wish her well on her coming of age.
Happy 70th Birthday
Many Happy 70th Returns to Mrs Jennifer Fouracres during February.
Happy 96th Birthday
Mr William Oliver, a well known figure in our village, celebrates his 96th birthday on 23rd February. He owned his own business and was the local milkman for over 40 years. In 1939 he was a founder member of the Mens Detachment – which later amalgamated with the Ladies to become the St Dennis Branch of the British Red Cross. The county provided and maintained an ambulance here which was manned voluntarily by the detachment until 1980. Mr Oliver was awarded life membership of The Red Cross in recognition of his long and loyal service. For Several years he served on the St Austell Rural District Council and was a member of the St Dennis Parish Council for over 40 years. On his retirement he was presented with a silver watch for services to the parish. He continues to support other organisations in the village and still enjoys his gardening. A truly remarkable man! Happy Birthday to our Dad.
Love From Denis, Meryl, Jeannette and all the family.
THANK YOU
A big thank you to everyone who took part in the Fun Run/Walk on Boxing Day. The sum of £153.40 has been donated to the Children’s Hospice South West’s ‘Precious Lives Appeal’.

PROFILE - The St Dennis Cancer
Committee
The St Dennis Cancer Committee began it's life in
January 1962. A meeting was conveened by Mr Ralph Burnett at the C of E
School and eighteen people attended. Mr Household, the area secretary for
Devon and Cornwall, British Empire Cancer Campaign addressed the meeting
outlining the work being done by the BECC and stressing the need for public
support. It was decided that a St Dennis Branch should be started and the
committee was then formed with Canon Lambert as President, Mr Ralph Burnett as
Chairman, Mr Parker as Treasurer and Mrs Jay as Secretary.
The first committee meeting
was held a couple of weeks later on 31st January 1962 when it was agreed to call
on every house in the village with a leaflet and the collecting tins.
Committee members all volunteered and each took a street or streets to call
on. A total of £47.7s.4d was collected - a great deal of money in
1962!!
The committee went
from strength to strength and over the years has raised almost £200,000 for
Cancer Research UK. This is a tremendous sum of money to raise from the
extremely generous folk of St Dennis. There are still some founder members
on the committee who have served for the last 46 years, Mr Ralph Burnett who
only stepped down as Chairman in 2006, Mr Jack Burnett still serving the
committee after 45 years, Mrs Olga Trethewey still on the committee and running
the raffle after 45 years. Mrs Betty Bell served for 25 years as secretary
only giving up the post in 2006, but now remaining on as a committee member, and
continuing to help with all events. Mrs Val Trudgeon has served on the
committee for many years and is joined now by her daughter Kaye Roberts
providing vital help behind the stalls and contributing greatly to the fun of
the day.
The
present committee president is Mr John Blewett who is so often pressed into
speaking on our behalf and takes photographs for our album of many of our
events.
The present chairman Mr Stan Goodman and his wife Hazel are
also long serving committee members along with Mrs Phyllis Luke and Ms Christine
Nance. We are blessed by our present treasurers Mrs Clarice Westlake and
Mrs Molly Lorimer for keeping our accounts up to scratch and to Mr Ken Rickard
for his auditing abilities. One person must be mentioned and that is Mrs
Carole Ellacott for the endless cups of tea and coffee she tirelessly
provides. Other committee members not already mentioned are Fred
Greenslade, Ginny Edwards, June Rickard (who is our new Vice Chair) and Sylvia
Hambly. All work unstintingly and some have done so for many years.
We have had to say goodbye
to many of our friends over the years and most recently to Elizabeth Brown who
sadly passed away in 2005, Mrs Betty Hick who has retired due to ill health
and Mr Gerald Kelly who had to resign for family reasons. They have all
made their mark and are missed by us all.
We must mention our stalwart regulars who attend come rain
come shine and give so generously of their time and money. We couldn't do
it without them. Each year we manage to hand over a cheque to Cancer
Research UK (details of this year's cheque will appear in a separate article
during either February or March). St Dennis may be a small village but it
has a huge heart of which it should be justifiably proud.
If we have left anyone who has ever served on the
committee out may we please apologise for the oversight, no offense is
intended.
The Magazine Committee will be
profiling other voluntary organisations in the village over the coming months
and we will be interested to hear what you think of the articles and also to
hear any anecdotes and/or stories you may have from the
past.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR .
Dear Editor
What a delight it was to go into the village today and find it completely litter-free! A big thanks to whoever it was who achieved this. Wouldn't it be nice if it could remain like this always? I'm sure it would be possible if we all used the litter bins and encouraged our children to do the same. We live in a great village - let's keep it so.
Valerie Morganti
Dear Ed
A sign is needed to stop horses being ridden through the lane from Jackie Salmons to Trelavour Square. They are being ridden through when the children are coming out of school, and leaving piles of dung behind.
Also, a light halfway
along the lane to be able to see the mess left after dark is
needed.

County Council Waste Contract with
SITA
Dear Sir or Madam
Since the decision was taken to bring all non recyclable household waste to the centre of Cornwall by our County Council, the cost of a barrel of crude oil has rocketed from around 30$ to near 100$ and shows no sign of going down.
A report in the press a few weeks ago gave some facts regards taking all the landfill to United Downs. Briefly it would, according to the article, amount to 750,000 miles of road travel a year. A huge amount of travel by any standards.
Lets apply this logic to the proposed carrying of 240,000 tonnes of waste annually to the centre of Cornwall, plus taking away 60,000 tonnes of ash. Not for an interim period but for a contracted time of thirty years.
The case made against carrying waste to United Downs from all round the County must surely be equally applicable to the proposed transportation of waste to Central Cornwall from all corners of the County. The environmental issues surrounding the transportation of waste are mind blowing. It also flies in the face of some clauses laid out in the Counties own strategic documents.
There are thousands of residents who have worked out that a Waste Contract that says all residual waste that cannot be composted, recycled or reused in some way will be taken to a central site in Cornwall was flawed from the start. Given the latest fuel cost increases the Contract must be even more questionable.
One of the sites, the preferred site, for an incinerator (Cornwall Energy Recovery Centre) has no suitable road access from the A 30 and will need a new road access. All this at a time when the A 391 proposed upgrading from the A 30 to St Austell, has been shelved.
Surely the officers, councillors and contractor should revisit the business plan and reconsider the options open to them. Come on you decision makers at County Hall, please tell us how the balance sheet stacks up now.
If the figures do not add up please, for the sake of our Cornwall’s future, have the courage to reconsider the disposal of waste issues and recognise there could be a better way forward.
To admit conditions and technology are changing will show that you, our decision makers at County, do have some commitment to us the electorate after all.
Just a thought.
If the decision to bring all non recyclable waste to Central Cornwall is such a sound one, then the new Unitary HQ must also be in Mid Cornwall. Even heated by latent heat from an incinerator. Oh sorry. The Cornwall Energy Recovery Centre.
Just a thought.
Happy New Year.

Walkers Corner
Good news for walkers as the old railway line between Stamps and Gaverigan bridge has been cleared once again. This was originally cleared out by the owners, several years ago, but the vegetation had grown back, making it quite difficult to negotiate.
It opens onto the main road, where you can see that the old railway line to Indian Queens has been opened up. If you cross here, please note there is very fast moving traffic using this road.
If you walk along the track towards Indian Queens, and stay on the sandy road, you will emerge opposite Gnome world, having crossed the A30 by means of a bridge.
If you would like to add your favourite walk to this column, not necessarily in St. Dennis, please send it to the editor,
stdennisnews@hotmail.co.uk , or put it in the box in Claytawc.
PARISH COUNCIL NEWS.
The Parish Council meet on the 2nd Tuesday of each month in the ClayTAWC Centre. All meetings start at 7 p.m. The public are very welcome to attend. There is a regular agenda item of 10 minutes duration when members of the public may speak and raise their particular concerns.
Notes from the Parish Council meeting held on 8th January.
PCSO Fisher reported that there had been 6 reported crimes during December of which 3 had been detected. .PC Dingle reported that the football coaching scheme for children of 9 years old upwards would be starting early in February and would run initially for 10 weeks and possibly longer if the scheme is successful. PC Dingle thanked the Parish Council for its support and financial contribution of £150 and added that it would be advantageous if parents were prepared to be involved with a view to establishing a youngsters village football team.
The Council have received complaints about horses being ridden on footpaths in the village and will be putting up notices prohibiting horses to be walked or ridden in these areas. The local Police team have also been informed.
A member of the public has reported vandalism in the Borough Council car park off Wellington Road and the Police will be keeping an eye on this area in future.
A member of the public
spoke at the meeting about the possibility of a skateboard facility being
provided in the middle of the village for younger children. The Council agreed
that the Playing Field Committee would consider this and also advised the
parishioner to approach Celine Elliott the YP2 Project
Manager.
The Council will be undertaking a safety check on all the memorials in the Cemetery over the next few months. Where any memorial is found to be unsafe the family of the deceased will be contacted and if the family cannot be traced the Council will consider steps to make the memorial safe.
Complaints have been received concerning excessive amounts of mud being deposited on the roads in the village by traffic from the Parc an Bre development and the Council have written to Restormal Borough Council Planning Department regarding this.
Councillor Greenslade has been raising the subject of dog fouling in the village at Restormal Borough Council in an effort to increase the presence of the Dog Warden staff in St Dennis. It has been agreed that the Dog Warden staff will be more active in the village and owners of dogs should be aware that the Warden has the power to levy on the spot fines on any person who does not clean up after their dog.
In the public discussion period the following information arising out of the latest meeting of the Sita Liaison Group was reported :
the proposed Energy from Waste plant will generate additional traffic of 140 lorries per day excepting Sundays.
an estimated 48-50 full time jobs would be generated which would be advertised locally.
the height of the chimney would be at least 100 metres.
Natural England and the Environment Agency have reported that the pollution levels on the Goss Moor have exceeded the critical load.
a public exhibition by Sita outlining plans for the proposed plant will be held in the Working Men’s Club on the 23rd and 24th January.
the Planning Application from Sita is expected to be lodged with the County Council in March.
all future minutes of the Liason Group will be provided to the Parish Council.
