Thank you - St Dennis Variety Company
The St Dennis Variety Company has
done it again with a wonderful production of Pinocchio. The set was magic and
the enthusiasm of the cast transferred to the audience making it a most
enjoyable occasion. James Harvey and Tracey Richards as Jimminy and Jemmima
especially got the audience participating with their antics as did Tracey
Cornish and Abi Bilkey as Spaghetti and Macaroni. The company will certainly
miss Tracey, this being her last production. Her enthusiasm and professionalism
is phenomenal. Hannah Yates as Star Fairy was word perfect and brought a little
glamour whilst Barbara Johns as Cruella provided the necessary "evil" without
which no pantomime is complete. Mandy Harvey and Ivor Johns as Rissotto and
Geppetto were brilliant, providing more laughs and holding things together.
Jordan Kellow was not only tall, dark and handsome but provided that little
extra thrill with his portrayal of Stromboli. Melissa Harvey and Emma Bilkey as
Tony and Marietta gave us the romance and Matthew Yates was amazing in the lead
role of Pinocchio. In short it had everything a pantomime should have, good -v-
evil, romance, scary bits and loads of laughs. The audience was keen to join in
although the singing at the end took a little practice, and Spaghetti's antics
(not to mention the accent) throughout had everyone in stitches. This was a
marvelous evening and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. Well done everyone
and thank you again for another great
performance.
CORNWALL RURAL COMMUNITY COUNCIL
Working in St Dennis with local young people over the past six months has been a steep learning curve. While I have found no difficulty in initially forming relationships with them, gaining there trust over this time has been a crucial, and at times, difficult task. The first place I met local young people was on the area known as 'The Downs'. Bordered by Manson Place, Gothers Road and Trelavour Road, it was an area of apparent waste-land where young people congregated to ride bikes, climb trees and just hang out with friends away from prying eyes! To the untrained eye this seemed to be scrap land, which was blighted by fly-tipping and generally felt neglected. To the young people it clearly held the promise of adventure and fun.
I asked the young people what they liked to do and everything they talked about focused on this area of land: then they expressed a wish to improve it, not just for themselves but for their brothers and sisters, too. Not wishing to raise hopes, which couldn't be fulfilled, I made enquiries about the ownership of the land, which lead me to the Tregothan Estate. Initial conversations with the Estate Manager suggested that if a need could be demonstrated by the young people, and equivalent adult support could be raised, an arrangement to see the land developed for the community could be worked on.
Which brings us up to date. Over the summer, the young people worked with myself and a film maker (Krystyna Zdan-Michajlowicz of M-Mad) to produce a short film about the downs and it's importance to them. They also explored the possible options for developing the land, including tree-planting initiatives, a picnic area, bins and recycling facilities, a wet-land area to promote wildlife, as well as adventurous 'play' equipment for teenagers. Out of this 'wish list' it was easy to see that the young people envisioned an area for the whole community where grandparents and small children could enjoy themselves at the same time as local teenagers.
This image could seem at odds with that promoted traditionally of 'teenagers', but, in my experience as a youth worker, just as it is impossible to understand individual adults without first getting to know them, so it is with' teenagers'. The collective mass can seem intimidating, but as soon as names are remembered and questions about how they're feeling, what they've been doing etc. are asked, the trust that is necessary for meaningful relationships can begin to form. Once this is established, it needs to be built upon. This is the stage we currently find ourselves at: young people have created a vision of what they would like for the community, the landowner is willing to support this development, The only thing missing now are the adults to complete the picture. Once a group has been established to support these young people, funding can be looked at to make their dreams a reality.
The parish council and other local organisations have expressed an interest in such a group and I would now like to extend the invitation to the whole community. Of course, if you have expertise or enthusiasm for such a scheme you are welcome, as are those who simply see the value in recognising the positive efforts of local teenagers to improve the area everyone lives in.The meeting will be at 7.00pm on Thursday 10th April at ClayTAWC
I can be contacted either through email celine.elliott@conrwallrcc.co.uk, by phone 01841 540 698, or feel free to drop-in and see me in my office at ClayTAWC.

Newsflash from the United
States
I have received emails
from Karen Michaud who recently moved to Maine in USA. She and the family
have settled in well, the boys have started school and Harvey the Alsation just
loves the snow which is 18 inches thick at the moment. They had a long
trip lasting nearly 24 hours travelling to London, flying to Boston and then a 4
hour journey to Maine. The new house is great and it is good to have so
much space both in the house and on the grounds which amount to some 5
acres. Many of you know Karen, she was involved with the Cancer Committee,
and it is good to hear that all is well. Their furniture won't arrive for
another month but that doesn't seem to be bothering them. I have emailed
back and sent all our love.

DAFFODIL DAYS by Clarice Westlake
Wherever we
wander, wherever we go
Our senses are quickened, our hearts are aglow.
The
sun may not shine, and the rain it may teem
But the world is alight with the
daffodil's gleam.
The
hedgerows and gardens, with trumpets held high
They raise their bright faces
to smile at the sky.
With reckless abandon and hearts full of glee
They
wave and they beckon to all that they see.
And out in
the woodlands, beneath nodding trees
A carpet of gold does a dance in the
breeze.
As gaily they wander o'er meadow and lea
Ahead of us stretches
this vast yellow sea.
In fields
and on hillsides, for mile upon mile
They glow and they glisten, they dance
and they smile.
Away to the world's end, a shimmering haze
Oh, these
joyous, heaven-sent "Daffoldil Days".
ST DENNIS VARIETY COMPANY
The cast & committee of St Dennis Variety Company would like to thank everyone who supported this year’s production of Pinocchio & made it such a success. I hope Matthew; alias Pinocchio has got rid of all his splinters! What a star he was as indeed they all were.
We are already reading scripts for next year and will be holding auditions sometime in June – dates for the AGM and Auditions will be advertised as soon as they are decided.
Does anyone in the village have any dry, secure storage we can use?
Now are stage is built we need to use the rest of the funding money we received to buy our own light & sound system, but before we do we need to secure adequate storage facilities – so if anyone can help or has a possible solution ring:-

St Austell Golf
Club
The St Austell Golf Club
kindly allowed the St Dennis Cancer Committee to hold a raffle at the club on
Saturday 23rd February during their member's golf competition. We were
made most welcome by Mr Peter Clemo the club secretary and his staff and we
enjoyed the day enormously. It was little drizzly at first but this didn't
put the golfers off, they are a hardy bunch! We raised £152 from the
members together with £110 which represented the green fees, making a total of
£262 for Cancer Research UK. We would like to extend our grateful thanks
to Mr Clemo, the staff, Club Captain Mr Steve Hunt and all the members.
Thank you for your hospitality and generosity. St Dennis Cancer Committee
have been holding annual raffles at the Golf Club for the last 28 years and
it is only with the help of these most generous people that we are able to raise
more money for Cancer Research.
Maths Workshop at St Dennis CP School
Thursday afternoon
saw some thirty parents and a couple of governors attending school for a maths
workshop, some of us with great trepidation. However, we had a great time
learning exactly how children are taught maths these days, quite different from
what us oldies are used to. Everyone was very helpful and Sue Wilson who
"taught" us was great. This workshop provided a useful tool for parents
who will now understand what their children's homework is all about. The
afternoon finished with a tour of the school, the children acting as guides,
proudly showing off the various exhibits all around the school. They were
so enthusiastic and willing to help, it was such a honour to be there.
Cups of tea and coffee rounded off the visit, not to mention the Jaffa
Cakes.
Thanks to Ann Force, the staff, and especially the
children for a great afternoon.
St Denys
Beaders
The St Denys Beaders meet
every Thursday in the upstairs room of the Working Men's Club from 10am until
4pm. If you are interested in learning the various techniques of beading
please come and join us. This is a small, friendly group who enjoy
both the jewellery making and the socialising, so come on in and see what we
do.

Walker's Corner
One of the oldest public footpaths in the St Dennis area runs from St Dennis to Treviscoe.
To walk it, start at Henrda corner and go down Gulley's Lane. Go around Goonvean works and up onto the disused railway line and turn left. Walk along the path until you get to some steps which lead down onto a lane. Go under the low bridge on your right and up the other set of steps into a field. This is the field where the proposed incinerator is to be situated. At the moment you can follow the railway line across the field to the next kissing gate. This gateway tends to be muddy as the cows congregate around it.
If the incinerator is built, the footpath will be diverted around the edge of the field, making it a much longer walk.
Go through the kissing gate and cross the next field to a stile. You can cross the lane by means of the stiles, or go through the gates.
Cross 2 more fields and you come to a field on the outskirts of Treviscoe. This has a well used path running next to the hedge which leads to another gate and so down a lane to Barton Road.
To get back to St Dennis, you can emerge from Barton Road onto the main road, and turn right. Go about 200 yards to a stile (or pathway) on your right.
Follow the path down a very ancient lane and you arrive at the road to Trerice. You can follow the road all the way back to St Dennis, or you can turn onto another footpath just past the sewage works which takes you across a couple of fields and over a stile onto a farm lane which emerges near the industrial estate.
PRELIMINARY NOTICE
There is to be a 'Goss Moor open day' to celebrate the 7 miles of new off-road multi-use trail, hopefully to be held on Sunday May 11th.
More details to follow.
PARISH COUNCIL NEWS.
The Parish Council meet on the 2nd Tuesday of each month in the ClayTAWC Centre. All meetings start at 7 p.m. The public are very welcome to attend. There is a regular agenda item of 10 minutes duration when members of the public may speak and raise their particular concerns.
Notes from the Parish Council meeting held on 11th March.
The Community Policing report showed that there had been 7 reported crimes in February of which 3 had been detected.
The Council has erected signs on the footpaths running from Trelavour Square to Carne Hill and Hall Rd prohibiting horses from using the paths. This follows a number of complaints from parishioners.
The Council have fixed the date for the Annual Parish Meeting as Tuesday 22nd April at 7 p.m. in the ClayTAWC Centre. The meeting is open to any local government elector who may attend and give their view on Parish matters.
Arising out of pressure from Councillor Greenslade a pilot Dog Warden scheme is being trialled in the village by Restormel Borough Council for 4 weeks. Dog Warden staff have been patrolling to assess the scale of the problem, conducting an awareness campaign and will enforce penalties in conjunction with the Police.
The Council agreed to support, in principle at this stage, St Dennis Bands for necessary improvements in the Band Room and also approved a grant of £75 to ‘Shelter’ who will be focussing on helping families with young children in the Restormel area in 2008/09.
A member of the public present raised the issue of the lack of disabled access to the Cemetery and the Council’s Cemetery Committee will be examining this in the near future.
The Council noted the minutes of the first meeting of the newly formed Trelavour Downs Project Group which is exploring the possibility of turning land on Trelavour Downs into a public recreational and play area. The Council support the project and are hopeful that people will come forward to join the Group and help with the project.
The Council have been advised that Fore Street between Trelavour Road and the Spar Shop will be closed to through traffic for 2 weeks commencing 21st April. The traffic order issued by the County Council is to allow duct laying works to be carried out.(See Parish Notice Board for details).
The Council will be writing to the County Council asking for a parking area to be provided in the area of Gaverigan to allow local people easy access to the developing Goss Moor Trail.
